Audiobook Review: The House in the Pines
The House in the Pines by Ana Reyes is an eerie and gripping tale about lost time and the sudden death of a best friend. Maya, the story’s protagonist, is haunted by the past, particularly the death of her friend Aubrey after a brief relationship with a mysterious man named Frank during high school. Aubrey’s sudden and inexplicable death still haunts Maya, and seven years later, she’s determined to uncover the truth, even though no charges were ever filed. Maya knows deep down that Frank was somehow involved.
The audiobook adds an extra layer of intensity to this already chilling story, with the narrator capturing Maya's inner turmoil and her mounting paranoia. The suspense builds as Maya, while struggling with antidepressant withdrawal, stumbles upon a YouTube video showing a woman suddenly dying in a diner, accompanied by none other than her ex-boyfriend Frank. The eerie similarities between the two deaths drive Maya to dig deeper into what really happened on that fateful night.
Through flashbacks and present-day investigation, the listener learns more about Maya’s complex family history, particularly her mother’s past in Guatemala and the mystery of Maya’s father, whose unfinished book plays a role in the narrative. As Maya translates her father’s work, the tension escalates, and she becomes more desperate to connect the dots between the two girls’ deaths and Frank’s ominous presence.
Although the story initially feels a bit disorienting, the audiobook’s pacing helps weave the pieces together, and by the end, everything falls into place with chilling clarity. The narrator’s performance enhances the creepy atmosphere, making the twists and turns all the more unsettling.
I wasn’t expecting to be so absorbed when I started, but I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook experience. It kept me on edge, and I’d give it a solid 5 stars—it definitely gave me the creeps in the best possible way.
