Audiobook Review: The Heiress
The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins (Audiobook version) is a gripping tale of power, greed, and deception. The story centers on a young girl who goes missing, only to be miraculously found a year later. The atmospheric writing pulled me in from Colorado all the way to the Blue Ridge Mountains—an utterly immersive experience I couldn’t put down.
In this audiobook, the narrators breathe life into the characters, adding layers to an already tense story. The voices shift seamlessly between timelines and perspectives, heightening the suspense. Listening to it, I felt as though I was transported right into the eerie surroundings of Tavistock, North Carolina.
The plot follows Cam, who reluctantly returns to his hometown after his mother Ruby’s death. Though he’s the heir to her fortune and the family estate, Ashby House, Cam had walked away from it all a decade ago, determined to build a happy life with his wife Jules in Colorado. But as they return to tie up loose ends, Cam begins to sense that his extended family, who still live at Ashby House—and maybe even Jules—may have their own hidden agendas.
Told through flashbacks and present-day narration, Hawkins cleverly pieces together the puzzle, keeping the full picture tantalizingly out of reach. With every new insight into the characters’ motives, the mystery deepens. Full of twists, turns, and unreliable narrators, the story unfolds against a moody, gothic backdrop that completely drew me in. I was never sure who to trust or how everything would come together until the very end.
This audiobook may just be my favorite Rachel Hawkins experience yet! Perfect for listeners who crave gothic vibes with a modern twist.
