Audiobook Review: The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store
I read this book as part of a book club discussion and experienced it through multiple formats but listening to the audiobook, following along in the physical copy, and using the Kindle. The audiobook was narrated by Dominic Hoffman, who also narrated Deacon King Kong, which I thoroughly enjoyed. His narration was a perfect fit, so I was confident that The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store would be just as captivating. It was an automatic purchase for me.
Much like in Deacon King Kong, Hoffman's portrayal of characters with quirky, memorable names was both entertaining and engaging. McBride's writing style has a rhythmic quality that weaves together the backstories of each character, smoothly advancing the plot as their lives intertwine.
McBride masterfully paints a vivid picture of the setting, people, culture, and era, immersing me in the Chicken Hill community. It felt as though I was right there, observing the lives of Jews, European immigrants, and African Americans coexisting in a rundown neighborhood. Together, they stand in solidarity against white Christian America to protect a deaf black child from being institutionalized, all while secrets involving bigotry, hypocrisy, and deception slowly unravel.
