Audiobook Review: Starling House
This story is beautifully written, and the audiobook brings it to life in a truly captivating way. I loved the resilience, street smarts, and unwavering determination of the main character, Opal. Her deep love and care for her younger brother, Jasper, was heartwarming, and the narrator captured this relationship beautifully. (Plus, the character names were spot-on.) The tight-knit group of community outcasts that come together to form a family added another layer of depth, making the story feel even more powerful.
On the surface, this is a story about a haunted house that mysteriously calls to a girl and the lonely, orphaned boy trapped inside, longing to escape. But beneath that, it’s really a story about haunted people, the power of dreams, and the horrors of generational poverty. It explores how family bonds can both imprison and liberate.
The audiobook’s dark, gothic, and moody tone really enhanced the experience, adding atmosphere without veering into anything too graphic or horror-filled. The narrator’s pacing and emotional depth made it easy to get lost in the eerie world of the story.
I’d highly recommend this audiobook to fans of the author or anyone who loves a good, spooky read that stays just shy of full-blown horror. It’s a haunting and thought-provoking listen, perfect for those who enjoy dark tales with layers of meaning.
