Lone Women by Victor LaValle
Book & Audiobook Review:
This audiobook presents a fascinating mix of historical fiction and horror. The story begins with Adelaide Henry, a Black woman harboring a dark secret. We dive straight into a dramatic scene where Adelaide burns down her home, leaving the bodies of her parents behind. With a heavy trunk in tow, she departs from California and heads to the rugged landscapes of Montana to start a new life as a homesteader. Along the way, she encounters the enigmatic Mudges—a family of four blind brothers and their unfriendly mother.
Upon reaching Montana, Adelaide settles in a remote area and forms a connection with her distant neighbor, Grace, and her son Sam. As the narrative progresses, we slowly uncover the mystery behind the heavy trunk—its contents reveal a sinister connection to Adelaide’s sister, a monstrous twin.
The audiobook brings to life some truly unusual elements, such as a wealthy couple’s ambitious project to build an opera house and a harrowing attack by the monster. Despite these outlandish moments, the story is engaging and keeps you hooked. The ending might come across as somewhat predictable, but it aligns well with the story’s unique and eerie tone. Overall, it’s an engrossing listen, and I’d definitely explore more works by this author.
