Yes Please by Amy Poehler
Yes Please was an absolute delight from start to finish. Amy Poehler is brilliant—funny, candid, warm, and endlessly relatable—and this book only deepened my admiration for her. If you’re considering reading it, do yourself a favor and go straight for the audiobook. Not only does Amy narrate it herself (with all the charm and comedic timing you'd expect), but she also brings in a few special guests to read with her, making the experience feel more like a cozy, behind-the-scenes podcast than a typical memoir.
Listening to her share stories about her rise in comedy, her time with Saturday Night Live and Parks and Recreation, her journey through motherhood, and even her divorce felt deeply personal. There’s humor, of course—so much of it—but there’s also vulnerability, insight, and an honest reflection on the messiness of life.
As a Parks and Rec fan, the chapter dedicated to the show hit especially hard. Hearing her speak so lovingly about the cast and crew—and even including audio clips from some of the most iconic Leslie and Ben scenes—gave me chills. It was nostalgic, emotional, and reminded me just how much that show (and her character) has meant to so many people.
What stood out most to me, though, was how smart and grounded Amy is. She doesn’t pretend to have it all figured out. She talks about success, failure, anxiety, ambition, and aging with a refreshing honesty that’s often missing from celebrity memoirs. She’s a powerhouse in comedy, yes, but she’s also someone who seems like she’d give you great life advice over coffee and make you laugh through your tears.
Yes Please is a love letter to creativity, resilience, and growing up on your own terms. Whether you're already a huge fan or just curious about the woman behind the laugh, I dare you to finish this book without falling at least a little in love with her. I’ll definitely be picking up the physical copy next—I want to see her words on the page, even though her voice in my ears felt like the perfect way to experience this book. Highly, highly recommend.
