To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han
The story is told from the first-person perspective of Lara Jean Song Covey, a mixed Caucasian and Korean teenage girl. She has an older sister, Margot, and a younger sister, Kitty. Lara Jean does her best to be a loving sister and daughter, but she’s still coping with the loss of her mother from when she was younger. It really hit me when Lara Jean would remember something her mother did or how she was—it's clear how deeply that loss still affects her.
Lara Jean’s life feels somewhat stable, though there’s the added complication of Margot moving to Scotland for college. Lara Jean briefly grapples with lingering feelings for Margot’s ex-boyfriend Josh. It’s relatable, seeing how she feels caught in the middle, having been part of a trio for so long.
At times, I found Lara Jean a bit too naive, but that’s part of what makes her so endearing. It was wonderful watching her grow stronger, more daring, and start to assert herself. Her transformation is visible not just in her actions but even in how she dresses and the way she keeps trying to braid her hair. Everyone around her seems to see her as a young woman, while she still wants to hold on to her childhood.
The supporting characters are also well-developed. Margot, in particular, stands out as someone who’s always thinking about her family and trying to make things easier for them. In a way, she becomes like a second mother to Lara Jean, and it’s poignant to see how much Lara Jean struggles when Margot leaves. The writing captures the thoughts and emotions of a teenage girl very well, and the pacing is spot-on. There were times when I was surprised by how quickly I reached the end of a chapter.
The only thing that left me puzzled was the setting. I believe the story takes place somewhere in California, but I’m not entirely sure. It was probably mentioned somewhere, but I don’t recall the specific location. That’s really my only critique, though. The town doesn’t feel particularly real, but that might be because Lara Jean mainly stays within her house and school.
The ending was perfect and left me with a big smile.
