Lucian Rollins and Sloane Walton have been orbiting one another since childhood, but a series of misunderstandings and tragedies kept them at a distance for years. Now, as danger looms over their close-knit group of friends in Knockemout, Lucian and Sloane are repeatedly thrown together. Their mutual attraction, which has simmered for so long, begins to feel like something deeper, yet the weight of their history and the secrets between them keeps them from fully embracing what everyone else seems to already know.

Things We Left Behind is a satisfying conclusion to the Knockemout series, bringing Lucian and Sloane's complex relationship to the forefront. Both characters are deeply scarred, particularly as Lucian deals with the aftermath of an abusive childhood. The layers of their pasts are peeled back through flashbacks in the first half of the book, building up the tension between them. The moments where Lucian and Sloane finally let their walls down are undoubtedly the highlights of the story, showcasing their vulnerability and chemistry. However, the pacing can be uneven. Much of the first three-quarters of the book reiterates why the two remain apart, which slows the narrative at times, while the suspense element only really kicks into high gear in the final stretch.

That said, Things We Left Behind remains an entertaining and emotionally rewarding finale to a beloved series. The audiobook adds an extra layer to the experience—hearing Lucian and Sloane’s emotions come to life through the voices of talented narrators adds depth to their story, making the slow-burn romance and suspense even more compelling. Despite its pacing hiccups, it’s a fitting and engaging end to the Knockemout trilogy.
