The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
This is a fantastic retelling of the story, and I actually think it’s even better than her Circe, which I also enjoyed. The focus is very much on the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus, with appearances from Agamemnon, Briseis, Odysseus, and others. However, this isn’t the Trojan War itself—we don’t even reach the Trojan Horse.
The story explores love, hubris, difficult personalities, and some genuinely good people. It touches on themes that we might now label as toxic masculinity, along with fate, free will, and predestination. With great writing, this retelling is far more immersive than the usual dry Greek myth retellings.
It’s not a happy story, but we all know that "Greek" and "tragedy" go hand in hand.
