The Selection by Kiera Cass
This book is like a modern-day fairy tale that had me hooked from start to finish. It’s not just about a charming prince rescuing a girl from her difficult life and whisking her away to a life of luxury—though I did enjoy that aspect. It also delves into the complexities of politics, as Prince Maxon learns how to lead his country and make meaningful changes to improve the lives of his people.
The story brings our main character, America, and Maxon together through a contest reminiscent of The Bachelor, designed to help the prince find his future queen. From the start, America makes it clear that a life of luxury isn’t her top priority. At first, she sees the competition as a burden, but she soon realizes it’s an opportunity to do good. She doesn’t want to be the queen herself, but if she can help the prince find someone else who would be a good fit—and maybe even help her family along the way—she decides the experience could be worth it.
I really enjoyed the dynamic between America, the other girls, and Prince Maxon. Each girl had her own unique personality, and watching the friendships and rivalries form as they all vied for the prince’s attention was both endearing and entertaining. What I liked most was how they still cared for one another, especially when someone was sent home. They weren’t just consumed by jealousy or selfishness, though those emotions did appear at the right moments. This made the characters and their relationships feel much more authentic.
America was such a fun character to read about—outspoken and full of life. Her relationships with her love interests, Aspen and Maxon, were also well-written. In the beginning, I was rooting for her and Aspen, but by the end, Maxon really grew on me, and I was torn about the decision America had to make. What I appreciated most was how the love triangle developed naturally, with no instant sparks flying between her and both admirers. Her relationship with Maxon, in particular, evolves in a believable way.
I’d recommend this book to young adult readers, especially those who enjoy romance, drama, and a touch of dystopian flair. The characters may be familiar, but it’s still a fun and easy read. While the story doesn’t focus as much on the dystopian world in this first book, it sets up the plot and the stakes for the rest of the trilogy perfectly.
