The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper by Hallie Rubenhold
Book & Audiobook Review:
This was a deeply moving and eye-opening read, offering a fresh perspective on one of history’s most infamous crimes. Unlike other accounts that fixate on the perpetrator, this narrative shifts focus to the victims, reconstructing their lives with meticulous research and profound compassion. The stories reveal the hardships these women endured—homelessness, societal judgment, and struggles with alcohol—and highlight how they’ve been unfairly reduced to stereotypes over the years.
Each section is devoted to one of the women, bringing their unique experiences to life and challenging the long-held belief that they were all sex workers. The author’s compassionate portrayal makes their stories personal, allowing for a deeper understanding of the societal failures that left them vulnerable. What struck me most was the inventory of their meager belongings at the time of their deaths, a poignant reminder of their humanity and the dignity they deserved.
The audiobook narration by Louise Brealey added another layer of emotional resonance. Her voice brought each story to life with sensitivity and care, making it easy to feel connected to the women and their struggles. The audio format worked beautifully for this kind of narrative, drawing me in and keeping me engaged throughout.
This book is an important reminder to approach history with empathy and to challenge narratives that dehumanize victims. A powerful, unforgettable experience that stays with you long after the final chapter.
