TwiThe Elite by Kiera Cass
The Elite is the second book in The Selection series, continuing the story of America Singer and her complicated feelings toward Prince Maxon Schreave. This book becomes particularly interesting when America discovers Halloween, a holiday that was canceled after the Fourth World War. Maxon decides to throw a Halloween party to revive the past, but instead of being a beautiful moment, it turns into a disaster when a video of America’s best friend, Marlee, on a date with one of the guards is leaked. Marlee is punished for treason, and both she and the officer are publicly caned. This event, instead of deterring the other girls, only strengthens America’s resolve to end the Selection and the caste system that has kept her family oppressed for so long.
America faces numerous challenges and doubts throughout the book, especially with her ex-boyfriend being drafted to work at the palace and determined to win her back before Maxon can. With the rebels drawing closer to the palace and the Selection narrowing down to the final four, America becomes less concerned with winning Maxon’s heart or the crown and more focused on surviving the process.
Overall, I found this book to be amazing.
It has a captivating storyline and a mix of personalities that adds depth to the narrative, especially the tension between America, from a lowly caste, and Celeste, a member of the elite. What I particularly appreciate is that The Elite doesn’t present a perfect, fairy-tale romance; instead, it shows Maxon and America navigating their relationship with real struggles and misunderstandings. This authenticity in their dynamic makes it stand out, as it reflects how real relationships work, rather than portraying a daydream-like fairy tale. Kiera Cass does a fantastic job painting the scenes, capturing both the emotional highs and lows of the characters. The Elite is a solid book with a compelling foundation, and I definitely recommend it.
