The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America by Richard Rothstein
Book & Audiobook Review:
This book delivered exactly what I look for in nonfiction: it’s well-researched, clearly written, and thoughtfully organized. It examines the history of discriminatory housing practices in the U.S. and their role in creating racial segregation and economic inequality—inequities still deeply felt today. Rothstein doesn’t claim these practices were the sole cause of segregation, but he convincingly argues that the government’s actions were significant contributors that violated Black Americans’ constitutional rights. Such profound violations, he asserts, demand a meaningful remedy.
What sets this book apart is Rothstein’s balanced approach. After presenting his detailed arguments, he offers practical recommendations, acknowledging the political and economic realities that make sweeping reforms challenging. He never downplays the complexity of correcting historical wrongs, but his persuasive case leaves no doubt that action is both necessary and overdue.
While some sections feel a bit dense due to the depth of detail, the overall narrative is gripping and enlightening. It’s a challenging but worthwhile read.
The audiobook experience added an extra layer of engagement. The narrator’s steady pacing and clear delivery helped convey the gravity of the subject matter without feeling overly academic. Listening allowed me to fully absorb Rothstein’s arguments and reflect on the structural inequities he describes. It’s a format that enhances accessibility to such an important topic, making it a highly recommended choice for anyone interested in understanding the roots of modern racial and economic disparities.
