Summer by Ali Smith
Book & Audiobook Review:
Listening to this series has been like a balm for my soul, and I'm sure it’s provided the same comfort to many others grappling with the 21st century’s rush toward hatred, division, cronyism, and inequality. Narrated with such care and depth, this audiobook journey through despair, fear, and hope resonated deeply with me.
Summer wraps things up beautifully. Although I'd give the individual book 4 stars, the entire series unquestionably deserves 5. The stories are steeped in an unsettling sense of déjà vu—history repeating itself in ways that are both shocking and predictable. Ali Smith’s characters often struggle to connect, imprisoned by their own worldviews, yet she always leaves room for hope.
That hope is particularly poignant in the apocalyptic year of 2020, but has been waning for much longer in our neoliberal era. Smith’s series isn’t a handbook for how to fix things, but rather a song we sing in the dark—a hymn reminding us that we are not alone, that we can transcend our darkest moments. She captures the potential for transformation in humanity, much like Shakespeare’s late plays, and offers a glimpse of the magic that can still be found within us.
