Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice
Book & Audiobook Review:
I found myself thoroughly immersed in this audiobook!
Set in an Anishinaabe community in Northern Ontario, the story starts with the characters being accustomed to frequent power outages, so at first, they don’t realize anything is wrong. As things begin to spiral out of control, the narrative cleverly maintains a sense of mystery about what’s happening beyond the north. This approach enhances the sense of isolation and highlights the community's remoteness.
The characters are deeply engaging, and I was particularly struck by the theme of revitalization. Nicole and the children, with their names and education in Anishinaabemowin, add a rich layer to the story. Their journey towards preserving and nurturing their culture is beautifully portrayed.
Overall, this audiobook is a captivating listen. I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel to see where the author takes these compelling characters next!
