Love, Theoretically by Ali Hazelwood
In Love, Theoretically, Elsie is a recently-graduated theoretical physicist who struggles to make ends meet by adjuncting at four schools while working for a fake-dating site on the side. She’s skilled at it, thanks to her people-pleasing nature, and has a knack for figuring out which version of herself will make others happy. Elsie’s dream job at MIT seems within reach when she lands an interview, only to discover that Jack Smith-Turner, a rising star in the department, is not only the brother of her current fake-dating client but also the man responsible for nearly ruining her mentor’s career and discrediting her entire field years ago. Worse still, Elsie can’t figure out which version of herself Jack wants—except for the real one, which only he seems to see.
I absolutely loved this book—caps-lock LOVED it.
Do I know anything about theoretical vs. experimental physics, liquid crystals, or any of that?
No.
But it doesn't matter because Hazelwood does an amazing job capturing the world of academia, which, to me, feels similar no matter the discipline. The subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) politics of departments, the pressure of job interviews, and the soul-crushing grind of adjuncting are all portrayed so realistically. Hazelwood even starts most chapters with exaggerated e-mails from Elsie’s students for comedic effect, but I swear I’ve seen versions of some of those myself. I haven’t read many novels with academics as protagonists, and most of those were about historians who have various adventures or solve mysteries. Hazelwood’s books are the first I’ve read that truly capture the experience of STEM academia in such a familiar and relatable way.
Where can I get this book?
