Happiness Falls by Angie Kim
Book & Audiobook Review:
The audiobook of Happiness Falls by Angie Kim starts with a gripping premise. We’re introduced to a close-knit family facing an intense crisis: their special needs son, Eugene, returns home in a state of panic, missing his father and unable to explain what happened.
The family, consisting of a brother, a sister, and their parents, quickly finds themselves in turmoil. As they attempt to contact the missing father and understand Eugene’s distress, unanswered calls and mysterious damaged belongings add to the mounting tension. A notebook with the intriguing words "Happiness Quotient" further complicates the situation, hinting at something significant that the father was working on.
Kim does an excellent job of maintaining suspense and intrigue with her storytelling. However, the in-depth communication research and the detailed exploration of methods to connect with Eugene occasionally pulled me out of the narrative. The inclusion of cause and effect charts and incremental discoveries contributed to the buildup, leading to a surprising conclusion.
Despite the gripping start and the tension-filled family dynamics, I felt the story lost some momentum midway. The family's ongoing frustration and strained relationships create a tense listening experience that may resonate deeply with some readers. Overall, Happiness Falls provides a thought-provoking and emotionally charged experience, though it may require patience as it unfolds.
