Bride by Ali Hazelwood
It’s been a while since I read a paranormal romance, and returning to the genre with Bride was truly refreshing. The mix of romance, political intrigue, and suspense, all wrapped up in my favorite marriage-of-convenience trope, made Bride an absolutely captivating read.
Set in a world where humans, vampires, and werewolves coexist, there’s constant tension and skirmishes between the species. This ongoing conflict has led to a dwindling werewolf and vampire population, which makes alliances in the form of "collaterals" essential. Collaterals are individuals exchanged as tokens of trust between species, forced to stay in the other's territory for the duration of the agreement. If anything goes wrong, it’s the collateral who suffers the consequences first. The twists and turns in the plot kept me on my toes, and I couldn’t figure out the true villain until the end. The shocking reveal of what the culprit had done all along—and was willing to do for an absurd reason—was unexpected.
I really liked the decisions made by Lowe and Misery at the conclusion, and I enjoyed the brief but sweet moments Serena and Misery shared. I do wish there had been a bit more groveling from Lowe, but since Misery deserved his happily-ever-after, I was content with the ending.
Overall, Bride is a thrilling combination of romance, intrigue, and supernatural elements, with memorable characters and a story that will stay with me for a long time. I highly recommend this to fans of paranormal romance.
