Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
This book was absolutely captivating.
I couldn’t help but get drawn into Anna’s mix of insecurities and adventurous spirit as she explored a new city halfway around the world and navigated a new social circle. I really appreciated how the author delved into not just Anna and Etienne’s romantic relationship, but also the dynamics of various friendships, the difficulty of keeping long-distance relationships, and family ties. The complicated relationships both Anna and Etienne have with their parents were particularly intriguing.
Of course, the heart of the story lies in the evolving relationship between Anna and Etienne. Etienne, who’s in a long-term relationship for much of the book, ends up sleeping in Anna’s bed, admitting his feelings for her, and spending every moment with her. It’s no wonder his girlfriend has issues with Anna, and it’s easy to sympathize with Anna’s frustration. I also felt for Etienne, who struggles with his emotions and his path to independence.
All in all, this was a beautifully insightful read about growing up and figuring out who you are.
