All Systems Red by Martha Wells
Book & Audiobook Review:
Performed by Kevin R Free, All Systems Red is the first book in the Murderbot Diaries series.
The audiobook introduces us to an AI-android who goes by the name Murderbot, a nod to a troubling incident in its past.
The story begins with a scientific team exploring an alien planet when one of the team members is attacked by a giant creature. The SEC Unit, a robotic security unit, steps in to save her. Unbeknownst to the humans, the SEC Unit has hacked its own governing system, allowing it to operate independently of human commands. Despite this, Murderbot maintains the façade of obedience while preferring to spend its downtime watching downloaded soap operas and studying human behavior from them.
I absolutely adore Murderbot! It’s probably my favorite non-human character since Rocky from Project Hail Mary. The character’s self-deprecating humor and occasional snarky remarks are delightful. I particularly enjoyed the development of the friendship between Murderbot and Dr. Mensah. I’m definitely planning to continue with the series.
Kevin R Free does a fantastic job with the audiobook, delivering a performance with excellent pacing and clear diction. His interpretation of Murderbot is spot-on, adding depth and charm to this lovable rogue.
