A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall
Book & Audiobook Review:
Listening to this romance novel on Audible was a thoroughly engaging experience, filled with both heart and humor. Alexis Hall delivers a story that's all about wish fulfillment, blending angst with moments of levity. The book’s friends-to-lovers trope is well-suited to its post-war setting, featuring a trans woman protagonist and her circle of friends who banter with delightful ease.
Hall excels at creating vibrant, supportive friend groups that add a lot of charm and warmth to the narrative. The audiobook, narrated with great skill, enhances these interactions, making the characters' chemistry even more engaging.
However, the story does feel a bit long, and a particular scene towards the end set in a brothel felt unnecessary and melodramatic, even for a romance novel. This scene, with its overly villainous antagonist, seemed to drag on and didn’t add much to the overall plot.
While the novel does prioritize modern sensibilities over historical accuracy, I personally found that refreshing. If you enjoy the style and are looking for a story with LGBTQ representation, this audiobook might just be your next great listen.
