In the beginning, I found myself conflicted about how Nesta was being treated.

Can tough love truly work without a foundation of love in the first place?

I made a mental note to come back to this thought later. I believe the author intended to make us feel empathy for Nesta so that we would grow protective of her—and eventually fall in love with her. I've always been drawn to Nesta, much like I am to Amren—morally gray characters are my favorite! But I know from reading other reviews that many people didn’t like Nesta, and I think that’s what makes this book even more remarkable. It’s a fictional story, and just because that approach wouldn’t work in real life doesn’t change the impact it had in the book.

Nesta, Emerie, and Gwyn training to become Valkyries was a highlight for me. Their journey as a team brought so much joy, and I appreciated the nod to mindfulness and meditation. The details felt thorough enough that readers, like myself, could take inspiration from them. I was also pleasantly surprised when I read the acknowledgements and learned that the author intentionally aimed to create a connection with readers through the women’s unity. “I hope some of these moments resonate, and will remind you, dear reader, that you are loved, and that you are worthy of love, no matter what.”

I highly recommend this book to fans of fantasy, particularly epic fantasy.

However, you should read the series in order, as the story builds on previous events, and you’ll miss crucial details if you haven’t read the earlier books. If fantasy is your thing and you haven’t started this series yet, you're missing out on an exceptional story.
