1984 by George Orwell
Nineteen Eighty-Four is the dystopian novel. Its bleak world, where free expression is suffocated and the government controls you through your own vices, can be off-putting to some. But I suspect that these same people rarely stop to look out their own windows.
Dystopias hold undeniable value in literature. You read them, recognize that they're not so far from reality, get angry, and feel compelled to act. Unless, of course, you're a politician. Then you read it and think, "That O'Brien guy had a point."
Set in the year 1984 (though, interestingly, it was written with 1948 in mind, but that's another story), Winston Smith lives under the constant surveillance of Big Brother. Day after day, he secretly writes rebellious thoughts in a private diary—an offense punishable by death. His life takes a turn when he meets Julia, a mechanic working for the Ministry of Truth’s novel-writing machines. Together, they form a quiet rebellion against Big Brother, the Thought Police, and Ingsoc. But in a world so controlled, can anyone truly escape the ever-watchful eye of Big Brother?
This book is dangerous. It encourages resistance against oppressive governments, which is why many have tried to ban it, fearing its power to ignite real-world discontent. So, my advice? Buy this book when you can. And if anyone ever tries to take it from you, well, it might be time to pack your bags and leave.
